arcanicanis (arcanicanis@were.social)'s status on Sunday, 27-Nov-2022 10:00:56 JST arcanicanis Just for some perspective on price proportionality:
I spent $560 for four 4TB drives (16TB total) in 2017
Just spent $520 for two 16TB drives (32TB total) today.
It's very interesting how they still cram more into CMR-style harddrives while price efficiency also continues to improve. -

nepi (nepi@fedi.snepi.space)'s status on Sunday, 27-Nov-2022 10:11:00 JST nepi @arcanicanis Wow, I managed to grab a couple 10tb drives at ~200/drive a few years ago, and that was shucking portable drives that weren't even NAS grade. Crazy that CMRs are still coming down in price per TB! arcanicanis likes this. -

Coyote (coyote@social.singing.dog)'s status on Sunday, 27-Nov-2022 13:34:01 JST Coyote @arcanicanis I don’t know if it’s still the case, but be careful with Iron Wolf 8TB drives. I got 8 of them last year to replace some SMR ones, and they run really hot. The old ones peaked around 40 degrees whereas the Iron Wolves have hit 60 degrees under the same conditions. I’ve had the airflow temperature S.M.A.R.T. attribute go off a couple times already. They already get the freshest air being right behind three fans, so I’m honestly considering getting so small heatsinks to epoxy onto them to try and help.
