     @neko on most operating systems they're used as indicators for the end user
     and considering even them can't trust that, may as well use `file` or any other file type detector to show it to the user instead, maybe with caching if required
     it's okay to keep it there, but it's just, well, not that useful i think unless you trust them to be almost as accurate as what they actually contain (which they usually are)

     @helene go off queen <3<3<3 file extensions could honestly be part of a file system which may be dumb, so i think keeping it as part of the filename is just okay

     @helene Well, unfortately you have to make a judge based on the file itself without file extensions, which is slower than just a extension. It also makes it easier when looking at content from a file browser or just plaintext in general, you can just store a file and base it's type very clearly off a string. In all honesty, I don't think there is a better way one could make it clear, it's just sort of a convention

     @neko @helene I guess looking into the file is way more computationally expensive on big folders than trusting the user/program's extension naming. Plus having the explorer be able to identify infinity types of files :acat_insane:

     @mergan @neko it's also not viable simply because files can be changed a lot, the detection can be non-trivial, etc
     
     but in most situations you don't need to know what files contain, as an end-user, unless they're images or documents and can be previewed
     
     so in the end it's just a hint in the name (like drawing "strawberry" on a jar containing jam) but it doesn't matter all that much

     Extention aren't necessary for end users, a tag defining the file type managed by the FM would be more than enough.
