   @glyph I recall often a line from the infamous “Programming Sucks” post:

   Why do we tell you to turn it off and on again? Because we don’t have the slightest clue what’s wrong with it, and it’s really easy to induce coma in computers and have their built-in team of automatic doctors try to figure it out for us.

     something on my computer is causing enormous lag spikes every few minutes, bad enough to cause my mouse cursor to stall. and yet despite literally 44 years of experience using these cursed things, I have no practical idea what to do to find out why that is
