It was, it still is, heartbreaking to watch Mozilla's visionless, clout-chasing leadership so desperate for another grasp at relevance that we started investing in the "most trustworthy" version of a technology that was clearly - obviously, to anyone paying attention - intended to enclose and destroy the Web we said we loved and championed, trying to ride the coattails of the companies destroying the entire idea of the Web and any meaningful, participatory social commons underneath it.

So, OpenAI admits [two things in disclosures presented to the court](https://www.404media.co/doom-loop-openai-and-microsoft-admits-llms-are-destroying-the-web-and-built-on-theft/): - That their products are utterly dependent on work ingested without compensation. - That their derived product is directly substituting for this work, removing the economic incentive to perform that work in the first place. Meanwhile, the EFF filed an amicus brief in the case claiming that this use is exactly what was intended by the ‘To promote the Progress of Science and useful Arts’ justification for the existence of copyright in the US Constitution.
