I've somewhat been wanting to replace my Ubiquiti Edgerouter 4, which is the router between my 1G fiber and my internal network. It still works fine, and does full line-rate routing, including PPPoE encapsulation and VLAN tagging. The problem is that Ubiquity stopped supporting it about three years ago. I've considered using a spare 1U Xeon server, which I believe can meet the required performance in software, but it consumes around 200W.

It looks like the BananaPi BPI-R4-4G or -8G (differing RAM size) may make a good replacement, with good open source support and bandwidth headroom for even higher speed fiber. It has two SFP+ 10G/5G/2.5G/1G ports, and four 1G copper. Runs OpenWRT, which can do either "software offload" (fast path) or actual hardware offload. Needs a 60W power brick. Costs several hundred dollars.

I don't need it to do WiFi, as I have a commercial access point, though the BPI-R4 is capable of it with an add-on M.2 WiFi module.
Before I upgraded my upstream from DSL to fiber, I used a cheap DLink wireless router, running OpenWRT with WiFi disabled.

When I said that the Edgerouter 4 works fine, that's not quite true. I've never been able to make IPv6 work properly on it. It can talk IPv6 to the outside world, and to my internal network, but I can't get IPv6 traffic to transit it. That's with kernel IPv6 forwarding enabled, and no IPv6 firewall rules 100% permissive.
No whatever I replace the Edgerouter 4 with, I look forward to finally having IPv6. Even though my service provider unfortunately only supports IPv6 through a 6rd tunnel.

@brouhaha I'm interested to hear what you end up going with. I've been wanting to upgrade my router, but I'm looking a little higher end to hopefully have QSFP+ support and a NIC smart enough to spread PPPoE traffic into multiple queues.
