Was trying to figure out what package I needed for video thumbnails in Dolphin. It's on the Gentoo forums, one of my oldest accounts which I rarely log into.
They've put everything behind the login wall now, probably due to AI scraping, which Gentoo officially opposes. Also, insane CAPTCHA that seems like it would be easily defeatable by any decent LLM harness.
I gave up and found the answer on and r/gentoo thread.
Open projects are closing down access to some things, and I understand the concern, even if I think their efforts are counter productive to an open web. I wonder where this all ends.

@djsumdog i think these public forums will have to put smaller-model bouncers in front of sign up and log in. as you said, any static defense is easily broken, so it really needs some intelligence.

@lain @djsumdog
"Claude signed up to all the mailing lists"
Who cares, it costs us nothing
So yeah maybe we gotta pivot and make the valuable data cheaper to distribute by using the old ways

@skylar @djsumdog if nobody goes to the sites because AI just serves up the answers, then the sites they scraped from will cease to exist, and the free lunch everyone has been enjoying for 32 years will end permanently
that's clearly where we're going. right back to expensive ass books

@djsumdog retards like this and their login walls are exactly why AI scraping is beneficial in the first place
