   I suspect something that hurts Mastodon adoption is that when you first join, assuming you don't join Mastodon.social, you get a server list:

   https://joinmastodon.org/servers

   But many of the top servers block sign ups, e.g. social.vivaldi.net and mstdn.ca

     @GossiTheDog Sounds like a bug to me. It doesn't make sense (and seems unintentional) that top servers on "JOINmastodon.org" don't let you actually join.

     Easy fix: Just drop all servers that block sign-ups or have broken sign-up from the list.

     Did you file a bug report?
