@thisismissem @evan @jdlh @quillmatiq @pfefferle @index this is an RFC 7565 thing because acct: URIs are defined to contain a local part always. if you want to change that you'd need to go through the IETF to update the RFC

@evan @thisismissem @jdlh @quillmatiq @pfefferle @index webfinger doesn't require acct: URIs though. this is a requirement of acct: URIs specifically and not anything to do with webfinger. as far as webfinger is concerned trwnh@mastodon.social and acct:trwnh@mastodon.social are meaningless -- i'm actually https://mastodon.social/.well-known/webfinger?resource=acct:trwnh@mastodon.social

@erincandescent @thisismissem @quillmatiq @trwnh @jdlh you could also use RFC 6415, Hostmeta. It's the same format as Webfinger, jrdd, but a different well-known endpoint.

@trwnh @index @evan @thisismissem @pfefferle @quillmatiq @jdlh Not really. You do a WebFinger lookup https://example.com/.well-known/webfinger?resource=https://example.com and go from there

@erincandescent @index @evan @thisismissem @pfefferle @quillmatiq @jdlh this assumes that / is always the hardcoded location of the actor

@trwnh @thisismissem @evan @jdlh @quillmatiq @pfefferle @index OpenID Connect discovery translates “user@domain.com” -> “acct:user@domain.com” and “domain.com” to “https://domain.com” for WebFinger, I don’t see a reason we shouldn’t do the same

@evan @trwnh @thisismissem @jdlh @quillmatiq @index I think this is mainly a lookup issue! „@notiz.blog“ could/should simply be looked up via https instead of acct!
