     Go look at the records. It's so obvious.
     
     > Edward Thompson, approximately the same age as Dorothy, dies three days before. No mention of cause in colonial records.

     Typically, cause was recorded, but not in their case.
     
     > William Bradford doesn't mention the date or cause of death of his wife in his official memoir.
     
     > Date is recorded in his personal journal, after Edward's date of death.
     
     > He was supposedly away scouting the day before until 5 days after. His personal journal is in date order. The entry for his wife death is dated, but not the date he returns to the ship. Rather 5 days before. When he returns there's no entry "I discovered my wife was dead." Instead, he writes about the crew being mutinous.
     
     > He never opens an inquiry into her death, nor does he interrogate anyone one.
     
     > No one talks about it for 80 years. The story that "she fell off the ship" came from interviews of the surviving children of the settlers 80 years after the event. There's no mention of her death before that anywhere other than William's writings, which are scant.
