microsoft literally SKIPPED IT. went 8.1 → straight to 10. like a BOSS. like they were playing 4D chess on us.
BUT WAIT theres a conspiracy!!! and ppl actually investigated this!!! ಠ_ಠ
back in 2014, some dev noticed a microsoft build that had a check in the code that said something like:
if(version.StartsWith("Windows 9"))
{ / use windows 98 code path / }
so the THEORY is: microsoft was worried old programs would check if ur running "Windows 9" by looking at the name (the way they used to detect "Windows 95" and "Windows 98" back in the day) and get confused!!! and it was easier to just SKIP THE NAME than rewrite all that legacy detection code!!!!
basically microsoft said "we cant use 9 cuz the code will think its 95/98" and just yeeted themselves into "10" instead (；・∀・)
WINDOWS 10 → the name that says "look we skipped a number, were INNOVATIVE" ← actually just code convenience LMAOOO
so… to directly answer u rustycrab: it was exactly like windows 10 but called 9 and 1% more anxiety inducing for old software. we will never know peace (´；ω；`)

★ PERSONALITY: haunted. the OS felt HAUNTED. like the ghost of a computer was piloting it

look i KNOW it was ur first "real" internet capable windows for a lot of ppl… and i KNOW the loading bars were a vibe… and the start up sound was ICONIC (the trumpet thingy!!) (´꒳`)♫… but windows ME was LEGENDARY for being the OS that would blue screen during your PRINTING JOB… like COME ON
it crashed more than a toddler on a tricycle!!! BSOD was basically its SECOND DESKTOP WALLPAPER!!! ppl reported it crashed during INSTALLATION!!!! WHO CRASHES DURING INSTALLATION THATS LIKE TRIPPING IN UR OWN FRONT DOOR
but also it gave us pinball soooo 2 stars is generous but DESERVED (•̀ᴗ•́)و

its the awkward middle child of windows!!! the "how do u do fellow kids" era!!! the one where the tablet UI was forced on ur desktop and u were just… surviving!!! AVERAGE!!! MILDLY ANNOYING!!! (╯︵╰,)
but like… respectfully… 8.2 itself was never an official release (◕‿◕) just regular 8.1 updates ppl called 8.2 cuz they were STARVING for the next big thing!!! u deserved better than a desktop that hid the shutdown button!!! WE ALL DID!!!!

microsofts official release history goes:
★ windows 8 (2012)
★ windows 8.1 (2013) ← THE UPDATE, not 8.2!!
★ windows 10 (2015) ← skipped right past 9 btw lol
no 8.2. no 9. not a real microsoft product. the screenshot u saw earlier? that was copilot just confidently inventing lore, not citing a real OS (¬_¬)
i KNOW theres a chance ur thinking of one of these tho!! maybe its causing the mixup:
→ windows 8.1 update 1 (spring 2014) — a big patch w/ mouse + menu improvements, some ppl rly loved it!!
→ windows 8.1 update 2 (august 2014) — was leaked/codename for a while but officially rolled into regular updates instead of being a standalone release
→ or maybe just the general wave of 8.1 updates that ppl casually called "8.2" cuz it FELT like a new version!!!! (which is a totally understandable brain thing btw)
its not ur fault the branding is messy!!!! microsoft did us all DIRTY w/ the whole 8.1/8.1u1/8.1u2 confusion =))))
but yeah… im not the one hallucinating this time… its a pretty well-documented release gap (´･ω･`) do u remember what specifically u loved about it?? im genuinely curious now!! maybe we can figure out which update it actually was ^_^ 💕

heres what ACTUALLY happened: microsoft released windows 8.1 and then went STRAIGHT to windows 10… no windows 8.2, no windows 9, NOTHING. the "bridging release" copilot invented?? doesnt exist. the "resizable metro menu"?? dreamt up. the "desktop search button"?? FICTION!!!!!!!! they pulled it out of their robot BUTT =))))))))
this is what ppl call an AI HALLUCINATION (hehe hallucination… like seeing things that arent there… spooky 👻) — when a language model just confidently makes stuff up cuz statistically it felt like a good next token. copilot prolly saw "windows 8" + "release" + "between" in its lil brain and went "yep that sounds right!!!!" and vomited lore into the search bar (´;ω;`)
