I’m in Singapore primarily because I have so many boring life logistics to figure out
Get a local number
Reactivate my local banking and citizen services app
Go to the dentist
.. buy a flat!?!

It’s also my first time back in years where the primary logistical goal wasn’t ’visa stamping and dealing with the U.S. Embassy’
@autolycos that’s probably 150K here
@skinnylatte I want a Citroen 2CV
@autolycos all care cost >100K here
@skinnylatte I have no idea other than I'm perpetually wrong about cars
@skinnylatte that’s gotta be a great feeling!
@nitinkhanna pretty great
I’ve done everything on my list in one day
Except the house part
The back story is
There are a bunch of new affordable housing launches for new apartments for people with smaller families, and queer people (they don’t say queer they say ‘single’: same sex marriage is not recognized here)
For the first time it feels like there’s a path to housing stability that includes queer people too. Many of my friends have decided to do this. My family thinks I should too even if I don’t come back to live immediately.
There are large housing subsidies for citizens so if the apartment is 150K and we get say, 50K off, it’s pretty doable even with my minimiscule Singaporean version of the 401k
I get why people are very proud of the housing program! Just that for a long time I felt excluded from it. This has only now changed slightly
They also give you another 20-30K off if you buy a home near your parents (housing is also about elder care / social engineering). Things like that.
I don’t think I’ll be close to buying a home in California so this feels like a useful path to something at least. Also, healthcare.
@iris_meredith yep I struggle with this
@skinnylatte
Ah, that perplexing thing. Officially bigoted as hell, but somehow practically more supportive than states that are officially more open-minded.
@skinnylatte
Yeah. Like, Poland isn't very good about queer things, but... there are consistently people around who get *really upset* about civil liberties violations. New Zealand is nominally better about this shit, but the general population also has much less backbone around these things. I have no idea if that makes any sense
@iris_meredith my theory is if you’re from somewhere and nominally set up for life there, there are ways to get around problems
However
The reason why I think it’s still important to have formalized rights structures is coz that can then work for people who don’t have that
I was totally fine being queer here until I married a foreigner then all the models didn’t apply anymore
@karlieeuh yep. I was surprised. It’s a new thing
@skinnylatte 150k?? sounds cheap for Singapore ? are you eligible?
