@squirtle keeps telling us in our Matrix room that apparently Linux distributions have no telephony or SMS capability.

I've honestly been considering picking up an external telephony module that I can use for wireless connectivity, SMS and calls on the go with my Steam Deck.
Both Guix and NixOS have software packaged for it.

My Steam Deck has pretty much become my daily driver for the most part. Been able to take it to college to do my coursework and casually play games in my downtown.
No Telephony or SMS is the only thing stopping it from being the ultimate portable device.

yeah, painfully aware of this as a ROM user but generally now if you have an alright supported device (and my chosen ROM, LineageOS, has been expanding their support tree pretty significantly imo and my device (Motorola bangkk) especially has great support (LineageOS even supports the custom Motorola gestures) with the esception of volte, volte is basically universally broken. You also are fucked if you want RCS aka Google Messages because gapps are not fun on custom roms (and kind of break the point imo).
That said SMS and calls are generally pretty broken if it all barely functional on Linux phones, to my knowledge only pinephone has some sensible solution.
I am purposefully excluding Jolla from this list because that company can go fuck itself with a half-oss product and some questionable to say the least decisions like open attestation. Even though Jolla is depressingly enough the only Linux phone which seems relatively usable. I say relatively because you just cannot beat key app support that Android and even roms have rn which makes Linux phones more toys than anything.
They also can't beat the sheer progress of Android with AOSP now getting super cool stuff like desktop mode and the very well done (imo) Linux app, terminal and desktop support. Funnily enough AOSP now supports Linux better than Linux Android. (Fyi waydroid a poc that's insecure and also can't do key stuff).georgia likes this. -
