    RE: https://mastodon.social/@QasimRashid/116879504461677409

The #USA was actually founded as a #Christian nation.

However, much of this was due more to cultural attitudes at the time, rather than the backbone or framework of the nation itself. The #USA has never been so #Christian that it would have been impossible for, say, an Atheist, to be #POTUS and do his job properly.

Sure, there is a lot of tolerance in #Christian nations that you just don't get with #Muslim nations that helped with this, but it's still true.

One of the most brazen lies in American politics told by MAGA and Christian Nationalists is that we were "founded as a Christian nation." The founders themselves left an extraordinarily clear record demolishing this narrative. Did you know that Thomas Jefferson owned a Qur'an? We must stand united to protect secular governance because it is the correct, legal and moral framework to govern a society. Alongside Americans United, I bring the receipts. https://www.qasimrashid.com/p/the-existential-threat-america-faces

@Sherri_Ingrey @taylan Ah, like how #KeyAndPeele explained the #ElectoralCollege in their skit #DunkTheVote?

@taylan @realcaseyrollins I am old enough to remember the shock and awe of the fact an IRISH (gasp) Catholic (choke) ran for POTUS, that would be JFK. It was a scandal at the time in the Eastern part of the USA.

@Sherri_Ingrey @taylan Yes, but electability and the ability to do the job aren't quite the same thing.

Sadly, an atheist wouldn't stand a chance. At least according to polls that were done some years ago, people would rather vote for a Muslim POTUS than an atheist. Even shortly after 9/11, I've been told. :blobcat-joy:
