If you're interested in the topic of privacy and security oriented VPNs, what their strengths are, what their weaknesses are, and what their alternatives are, you might give this thread and the many responses a read.

I disagree with several elements of some of the responses, but even those responses are often given with backed up claims, nuance, and in a respectful manner.
