    Why Drawing Tablet Brands Won't Collaborate on Linux FLOSS Drivers

    After investigation; Gaomon, XpPen, and Huion won't collaborate on open-source drivers because of outdated naming conventions. Here's what I learned from direct contact with their technical teams, and what I plan to do to move forward.

      @uis @mangeurdenuage @davidrevoy Software patents are illegal, but patent offices grant them anyway.

      It's not about patents anyway, as only 2 of the proprietary blobs are for video encoding and decoding.

      @mangeurdenuage @davidrevoy > patent violations for accelerated encoding/decoding
      It's an excuse and a really bad one. So bad, that if patent office would believe that, they would be obligated to revoke patent as incomplete.

      >they refused because of trademark
      The fact they didn't ask/propose just forking/renaming the whole thing shows that it's just a bad excuse.

      >which is not something we can consider
      Points out they are in violation of either licenses/contracts.
      Similarly to why GPU manufacturers don't want anyone to be able to have their hardware working without a single binary blob (patent violations for accelerated encoding/decoding).

      You also have to remind that these entities have millions in fundings, the same way printer companies do.
      Not implementing drivers that are technically and legally working compatibly with a public operating system, meaning that it doesn't cost them as much as the proprietary ones as they don't have to ask permission, adds how bad of faith they are.

      Still thank you for your great work. Trying my own things on my side it's all so tiresome to try to reason with such people.
      I think it's notably why RMS just started GNU because of printer drivers, you can't negotiate with them or even have a fair exchange.
