I don't get this complaint. How much SHOULD Costco afford their staff per day? One dollar? Five dollars? That's gonna add up pretty quick over the year, across all their stores.

The cost will be lumped into the gross overhead and it will bear on the prices customers see.

What is this corporate EBT shit?

It's 2026. half your staff have societal grievances and will definitely abuse any honor systems.

Again the corporation will never pay the cost, the customers will.

Bring a lunch to work. It's not that hard.

And if they did get free snacks, how long will it be before you hear, "And all they give us is free snacks."

@PNS I've never had a job with free snacks. Coffee, yes. In fact, at my previous job an employee ran the snack cabinet. It was a quasi-honor-system operation (a piece of paper where you could run up a tab if you didn't have cash) and the "profits" went towards holiday parties.

At a normal office I've typically enjoyed free fridge space. Usually free coffee and tea and hot water. Free hot chocolate packets if the team is doing well together.

Free samples probably wouldn't last long.

@PNS It probably started free and then some employees began to feed their familyl and friends.

Managed a resraurant and we quickly had to implement limits. The one tech company I worked at started with an open bar for friday drinks and that scaled back to two and the bar closing by 8.

I didn't get free anything from work other than an occasional working lunch for a meeting until maybe 20 years ago. Starting then we got free coffee and tea.

Didn't expect anything free as well.

I've worked several places with free food. And yeah, even in "nice" companies where everyone is getting paid middle class wages, a lot of it goes home for the family.

The best thing a company can do is offer reduced price food. Sodas a quarter each. $15 credit towards lunch, etc.

It's hard to complain about a quarter for a soda, but no one is going to empty the machine to stock Friday's poker game.
