     it's funny, tooo me, to see the utility of Mastodon and comparable platforms that can offer small, agile, genuinely personalized social networking. meanwhile it seems like much of the development enthusiasm is in replicating the demonstrable mistakes that other platforms have already made. y'know? you gotta imagine my perspective and admit it is funny.*

     it also feels very cart-before-the-horse because trying to streamline user onboarding with these changes can't paper over the fact the user experience remains insurmountably opaque to Normal People.

     obviously i still use this software, so anyone can infer from that what they will. but I find the effort applied toward features like this akin to tilting at windmills.

     back in 2019 you said that you're not content with Mastodon simply being a "protest vote" that people opt into when becoming negatively polarized against other platforms. which is a position that makes sense at a first glance, and holds up after more thorough pondering.

     but the perpetual emphasis on discoverability, planning around large servers, and courting large commercial users, all seems directionally opposed to the actual benefits longtime users find in this platform.

     this feels like a reply you might give to someone shrieking at you like "website boy has done it again!!"

     and you get that a lot! so it makes sense in terms of pure probability to parse the thread as such. i know i have a chip on my shoulder from just a FRACTION of the amount of dingdongs yelling at me on this website over the years.

     but, crucially, that's not what just happened. i hope you're enjoying extra free time now that you didn't have in years prior.
