@Oaktag @KerryMitchell I think it’s possible to acknowledge that (1) Quebec has its own rules (2) French is not under pressure in France (3) Quebec also sometimes uses these rules in ways that oppress other people
@skinnylatte “chips de maïs” Seriously, though, she can’t possibly be unaware of these rules living in Quebec.
@KerryMitchell
This restaurant in France proper recognizes that Mexican foods retain Mexican names, https://nachos.fr/
@skinnylatte
@b0rk thanks for sharing the context!
and it's very weird to say "mary's place" too, I guess they're trying to call Place Ville Marie "mary's place", but I have never heard anyone call PVM that in my life. It's not like other historical English names in that area which were historically called by an English name. I can see why people would find it offensive.
@skinnylatte i looked at the cafe on google maps and I was surprised that they would have this sign as their main sign, the "at mary's place" bit seems clearly against the law
@KerryMitchell @Oaktag thanks for the context!
@skinnylatte @Oaktag I think the CBC should report on situations where immigrants and refugees are harmed by the imposition of the Quebec language laws, but stories like the one you linked should be viewed with some skepticism. The Liberals, when in power, have a history of trying to sway public opinion in favour of Quebec federalists (provincial Liberals) and the cafe owner appears to have some association with them.
