Today, after 15+ years of development, programming and construction, the NYSERDA contract delivery term for our Tier 4 contract with Hydro Québec commences! The 339-Mile Champlain Hudson Power Express (CHPE) transmission line is now delivering 1,250 megawatts of clean energy directly into New York City’s power grid.
CHPE is now providing competitively priced hydropower from Québec that is expected to deliver enough clean energy to power over one million homes (20 percent of NYC's load) and will reduce harmful emissions by 3.7 million metric tons – the equivalent of removing approximately 44 percent of the cars from New York City streets. In addition, the project will provide a total of $3.5 billion in economic benefits to New Yorkers and created approximately 1,400 family-sustaining jobs during construction, using a significant amount of union labor.
I want to recognize the extraordinary efforts from so many that allowed us to reach this milestone, certainly our colleagues at Hydro Québec, TDI - a Blackstone Portfolio Company, New York State Department of Public Service but especially an extraordinary NYSERDA team who saw this process through from concept to electrons flowing! Special thanks to Erich Scherer, Georges Sassine, Alex Stein, Anthony Fiore, Chief Program Officer, NYS, Peter Keane, Peter Costello, Mikel Shakarjian, Dave Crudele, Megan McEnaney, Macy Testani, Carl Mas, Kate Muller, Claudette Thornton, Gregory Campbell, Corinne DiDomenico and many more over the years!
We are building our energy future right here in NY!
