    Happy Friday, fediverse!

Looking at https://fedidb.com/stats, seems like things have been picking up around here again, nice!

Also, some interesting talks at today's Next Socials' PublicSpaces conference around communities, moderation, libraries and digital public spaces, and the sustainability of the open social web.

@stefan Ah, OK. Honestly, that seems like a long runway to me; I was estimating less than 2 years. Good for them for being careful with that money.

@stefan that user growth is basically 100% bot accounts connected to tags.pub though https://fedidb.com/servers/tags.pub

@evan Oh nothing about the service itself, just that I thought the fediverse itself is picking up in activity, with more people joining in. Now it's a bit hard to tell.

@stefan @rra I'd rather they didn't exclude bot accounts. They are active and useful parts of the Fediverse. However, I do think it's good to be able to track humans.

@rra I do like @evan's proposal. This way services like FediDB don't have to individually keep track of bots-only servers, and revise their data as they discover them.

      And consider servers like mine.

      https://stefanbohacek.online/public/local

      All bots, except one human.

@evan @stefan Yes, same here. the disappointment is not about tags.pub itself but rather that what seemed like more people discovering fediverse is in fact fedidb wrongly counting tags.pub as new users. In my opinion the fix is then not necessarily in nodeinfo but rather in in Fedidb excluding tags.pub, they exclude several other instances for different reasons.

@evan @stefan @rra Just to throw my 2¢ in, I too have fantasized about bot/human differentiation in NodeInfo, especially in the context of https://encyclia.pub eventually opening up to all ORCID users. Whenever that happens, its account stats might abruptly jump from 16 to 15,000,000 if I report all reachable accounts.

Encyclia happens to be a bot-only software and could be manually excluded from stats, but clear labeling and aggregation would be even better.
