95% of my achievements in life, love and career can be traced to how shameless I am at writing cold emails.
I would have been great in tech sales (but it is not my thing).

When I was 15, my school planned a school trip to Vienna, Austria. My classmates were actual relatives of the crazy rich Asians author. Their families inspired the books / movie (it’s all true).
My family couldn’t afford it.
My English teacher taught me how to make a shortlist of people to ask money from, how to draft letters to them. A family sponsored my trip because they wanted a middle class kid to go to this trip to the UN.
Many things about that: the inequality, how many kids would just not have had that opportunity, stayed with me.
I’m glad I got to go, and learned to adapt some of this for my life, but it would have been nice to have more opportunities for more people in the first place.
@mtechman one of the first books about poverty in Singapore (this is what inequality looks like) had an interesting sketch where they got low income kids to draw their daily routine. They found that they rarely had the time or resources to travel more than a kilometre from home (even with good public transit).
@skinnylatte agree so much...I'm still a bit haunted by how many of our students in primary school had never seen any ocean (3 hours drive to some lovely beaches)...
A decade after that I started on this work, that I think is my life’s work.
One day, I will do this work full time. The org has grown and changed in scope / size / name but I’m so very proud of how no matter what I do, helping to open up opportunities for people or to reduce harms for marginalized people is always the purpose of anything that I do.
