"The users who grew up on these platforms don’t know what they’re missing. They’ve never used a system where they were genuinely in control. The idea that you should be able to run arbitrary code on hardware you paid for is foreign to them — not rejected, but simply absent as a concept."

@lenzgr My first computer experiences were Apple 2, and I became competent in DOS. Yes, I had to type cryptic shit to play my games... but nothing stopped me from doing anything I wanted aside from my skill level and how much computing power I had. I learned batch files and DOSShell, and make my games launchable with a click.

Mainstream modern computers, and how locked and restricted they are, disgust me.

@lenzgr Linux has kept this power usage alive, but... there are issues I just live with because of it. I get locked out of things that won't allow non-locked software, for example.

@lenzgr I jumped to Linux in 2009. I was on Windows XP, I saw the preview of Windows Vista, and NOPE! I started with Ubuntu on an old iMac, then dual booting my primary PC (Ubuntu and Windows XP), then Windows went in a VM, and then one day, I didn't remember to set that VM up again.
Now, there's a Windows VM for a specific old Windows 98 game I get nostalgic for, and one left from extracting Nook books for DRM stripping.

@hellomiakoda sounds familiar. This is what brought me to Linux. Compared to Windows, it felt much more like being in control and understanding how things worked. The first time installing it and seeing that login prompt was a powerful moment I still remember.
