@anemone@mischievoustomato I know but I choose to pick my battles to an extent. eating pescatarian is better than eating other meats that lived their whole lives suffering. some animals like oysters barely suffer if at all
@technolyze@anemone@mischievoustomato being pescatarian is actually genuinely better than eating mammals as long as you dont eat cephalopods or cetaceans or other highly intelligent mammals which I would never do and as long as you dont eat fish that has been boiled to death which I rarely do. wild caught fish suffers less and usually has somewhat less capacity to suffer, though they aren't as stupid as commonly portrayed. for that matter neither are plants but one has to eat something.
@anemone@georgia@mischievoustomato fish aren’t mammals so we don’t feel as bad for their suffering, which i am fully behind, mammal supremacy screw those gill heads and scale backs
@technolyze@whinge.town@georgia@netzsphaere.xyz@mischievoustomato@tsundere.love probably. the animal with the highest brain energy consumption as a fraction of its metabolic rate is actually a fish, though that's more to do with it's special sensory organs (elephantnose fish if you're curious) than its intelligence. I don't think they are especially clever for fish
@georgia@netzsphaere.xyz@mischievoustomato@tsundere.love@technolyze@whinge.town I do not think encephalization ratio is a good metric for suffering, or even really for intelligence. mammals as a group have pretty oversized brains relative to other animals. Birds have much smaller brains than mammals but corvids, parrots, and others are more intelligent than most mammals
@anemone@mischievoustomato@technolyze but fish have much smaller brains on average than birds too I believe. one day I will stop eating fish too (but might still eat oysters) but that day is not today.
@anemone@mischievoustomato@technolyze I know some fish are more intelligent but most of the fish we actually commonly eat is not as intelligent as a pig or a cow. mammals and birds usually have much larger encephalization ratios than fish. you act like its totally unfounded and that avoiding factory farming in favor of suffering once isnt a good thing.
@georgia@anemone@mischievoustomato I bet oysters feel pain, we keep find exceptional memory and brain function in simpler and simpler creatures, it’s panpsychism, that rock you throw is screAMING IN PAIN
@technolyze@whinge.town@georgia@netzsphaere.xyz@mischievoustomato@tsundere.love I don't value an individual animal life over a human life (in general, I definitely value my shrimps and gecko's lives over some humans) but I think the animal holocaust industrial society has created tilts the overall equation against us
@anemone@georgia@mischievoustomato I think the real issue is like factory farming and stuff and corporate farms with Monsanto seeds are an issue too, but I do value existing human life over existing animal life so I don’t think there’s any reasonable path at the moment that could end that and provide for all
@mischievoustomato@anemone@georgia@pettanko you could argue it’s basically a giant suffering factory and it’s designed to contain as much suffering as possible on unseen scales incapable to other creatures
@mischievoustomato@anemone@georgia@technolyze yeah, nature is brutal, but at the same time i find it hard to blame animals for doing what's in their nature, versus humans who have the capacity to understand right and wrong.
