i think my least favorite anime trope,
right up there with le church le bad and corrupt
(yet where do all these good priests come from i wonder?),
is how they write whoevers the current antagonist as a cruel arrogant bumbling retard, bullying the innocent meek protagonist for no reason.
no need to write interesting characters just try to emotionally manipulate the viewer by showing the current antagonist doing an ugly face and being unreasonably cruel and drag this out.
i recall SAO, danmachi, and magi all did it and i dropped them for it.
but i dont think ive seen it done as much as in wistoria though.
i swear every other scene is like this

@smugumin Concept: The protagonist actually is inferior and needs to get better; the mean noble is simply protecting his nation against incompetent bumblefucking; the improved protagonist, having been acknowledged by the noble, admits that he was previously not worthy.
