Doing a lil interest thread :)
I'm from the south in the US! Joined this place from the #TwitterMigration, I'm hoping the #fediverse continues to grow.
I'm a #socialist & support #degrowth & #decolonization, I think we need to join environmental movement with the labor & national liberation movements. I practice no-till, regenerative #permaculture agriculture with the goal of growing a chestnut-canopy food forest with my community. I am an educator and work at a bar :)

@FluffyDragon Reorienting the economy around social needs rather than profit as a first step. In particular it means breaking the consumerist culture in the west and replacing it with sustainable development through recycling, reusing, repairing, & reducing our consumables. It would mean cutting on car & airplane usage in favor of reliable, accessible, free public transit in the form of high speed rail & buses where we can. Guarantee employment/social safety net

@zzzoey What are your thoughts on how to accomplish degrowth?

@FluffyDragon Circular economies in particular need to be emphasized, example: food => compost => soil => food. Oil/plastic/other fossil fuel companies need to be publicly owned so we can wind down production & rapidly expand renewables/green hydrogen.

@FluffyDragon probably one of the most important industries to degrow is the livestock industry. We can’t keep using and expanding the amount of land we use for livestock. This means cuts in meat consumption & we need to provide alternatives whether it be plant based, lab grown (only with renewable ⚡️), etc. Everybody doesn’t need to become vegan but we gotta consume less of it, personally I’m making it my goal to be meatless 2/7 days of the week.

@FluffyDragon cool!! Definetly good to do and encourage that. It’s gotta be degrown at a production level not consumer level

@zzzoey I'm also trying to head towards Veganism for sustainability reasons. I know I couldn't do it if I went all in 100% so I am doing a similar thing and just reducing meat consumption where I can and buying plant based alternatives for about 1/3 of my meals.

@zzzoey You're correct of course. Unfortunately degrowth is a pretty unpopular position to build a political movement on. But we will end up degrowing one way or another ?

@FluffyDragon I think it’s only unpopular bc capitalism has justified itself through endless economic growth & imagining different that is difficult. We can improve peoples standards of living and degrow harmful industries simultaneously
