Yeah, Apple was my reference standard for UI design for so long, it’s really disorienting to them biff it so badly.

There’s a Dieter Rams linked quote that good product design is about a collection of small details, and that seems particularly true with user interface. And #Apple - for all its many other sins - got these details far better than their competitors.

And that’s why these never-ending horror stories of how Apple has shipped a broken interface are so astonishing for someone who’s been learning from Apple UX and UI for over 30 years. It’s like they’ve taken the business model of enshitification and tried to turn it into an aesthetic.

…it’s not even that. It’s just ugly. Bad layouts. Bad margins. Bad proportions. Awkward animations. Flickers and flashes. Content peeking through all the negative space so that the screen is filled with visual noise. It feels designed by committee. It feels pasted together. The feel of Apple products has covered a lot of ground over the decades. They’ve felt elegant. They’ve felt basic. They’ve felt bauble-y and cute. They’ve felt futuristic. They’ve felt practical. But this is the first time I can recall an Apple product feeling •cheap•.
