Looks from here like the Trump regime is hoping Iran will provide a Reichstag fire-type event (look it up) in the U.S. -- see those scary warnings of attacks on California.
Why? A pretext to escalate domestic fascism, such as even more direct interference with this year's elections.

  California would be a strange target for Iran.
  It's not the center of government. It's not even pro-Trump or pro-war.
  It would make much more sense to target any of Trump's properties around the world.
