I fucking hate that Linux just Won't let you unmount a removable drive in use because it thinks you're too dumb to know what you're doing, but then some old Windows games Require you to unmount a removable drive in use because they came on two (or more) CDs and won't even detect if both are inserted at the same time

Meaning that I can't install my disc-based Call of Duty 1 copy because I don't have an optical drive reader anymore and even with cdemu Linux just Refuses to fucking do what I'm telling it to, cause "but what about the potential data corruption :(((("

How the fuck is Linux more restrictive about this than Windows to the point where it won't even let you do this as root 🙃

@hazelnot Just a useful note on CD drives... Mine was one with two USB A plugs because it needed more current. USB C offers more current. So I found a USB C to USB micro cable, making it much more convenient. If its an older optical drive, USB C to USB mini also exists, it's just a bit harder to find. These drives get all the current they need from a single USB C plug.

@hazelnot I have in the past used a USB extension to plug the power only plug in to a phone charger, lol.

@hellomiakoda I think it's a mini USB one, yeah, can't remember if it needed one or two plugs but honestly I'm ok with either option and I don't have USB-C in my PC anyway 😅

@hazelnot For the fronts, yes. For the rear, you can get a USB C card and just slot it in to a pcie

@hellomiakoda though now I'm wondering how hard it would be to retrofit that into an 8 year old desktop 🤔

Sounds like it might involve physically modifying the case though 💀

@hazelnot I'm actually surprised how few USB C devices I plug in to my computer... My phone sometimes, a USB C thumb drive I got to use between laptop and phone, and that optical drive I swapped a cable on. The thumb drive turned out handy for PS5.

@hellomiakoda yeah but a USB-C port in the rear sounds kinda pointless considering most of my peripherals are type A 😅

@hazelnot Honestly, if I didn't have USB C on my machine, that CD drive would annoy me, and not being able to cable tether my phone would irritate. Nothing would fully not work though.

@hazelnot The android phone I had wouldn't cable tether with a USB A to C cable, haven't attempted that with my Linux phone. That Android was picky as fuck about what C cable. Hence is how I ended up with a $50 C cable. I tried like a dozen, returning them, got mad and bout the thickest one with as many logos as possible, and boop, finally, it appeared as a cell modem.

@hazelnot I wanted it cause my distro at the time added a menu specifically for cellular internet and had features to easily manage the data cap. Doing over wifi worked, but was slower and was not as easy to manage.

@hazelnot Yeah, it's super cool. It's pink. One end is USB A, the other end is USB C.
