There's a bunch of media reporting - I don't know how accurate - that Windows 12 will require an NPU (a fake AI chip basically), which almost no PCs have, amongst other stupid features.

Requiring TPM in Windows 10 was stupid and created PC landfill during an economic, global and ecological crisis, to drive hardware profit margins and Microsoft Surface sales.

Requiring NPUs would do the same, during an additional cost of living crisis. If Microsoft go ahead with that, it's time to swap OS.

@GossiTheDog Why aren't you escaping the shackles now and instead waiting for them to go slightly further for one specific thing?

Next time you'll be going the NPU is fine, but if microsoft goes ahead with x...

@malwareminigun it's both I think - my understanding is the CPU allow list is to cover over a TPM problem, some of the earlier TPM implementations didn't work properly so they used CPU or some such

@GossiTheDog I don't understand why people keep blaming the TPM requirement for this; it was a standard part shipped on every system 10-iah years before it was made a requirement.

Blame the CPU allow list that excluded like 6 years of perfectly good platforms all of which had TPMs.
