Please stop with the complaints about “illegal” war. Yes, it is “illegal.” Legality no longer matters during this administration. You sound impotent and ignorant of the moment when you bang on that drum. That noise isn’t going to change things now.

1. I haven't abandoned my faith in the rule of law. That said, the reality of the moment is that it does not exist, unless it conveniently serves his purposes.
2. I sure hope WHEN this ends that there will be consequences. It might actually be the first time in US history that happens.

@WarnerCrocker I disagree. Trump wants us to stop thinking in terms of legality and constitutionality, because he wants to have unchecked power and to face no legal consequences. The rest of us need to hew to the perspective that the law and constitution matter. One day we will take this country back and there will have to be consequences. That won't happen if we abandon our belief in the rule of law.

@WarnerCrocker I didn't imagine you'd given up your faith in the rule of law. But if we stop talking about it, people start to forget its importance. Then Trump has won, because his behavior is accepted as normal.
And yes, the US has been terrible at imposing consequences on powerful people. What's happening now shows that that has to change.

@bodhipaksa My concern with the discussions around all of this is that the concepts of what's legal and what's not lead to a misplaced sense of comfort that the rule of law is some sort of divine salvation, thus breeding complacency along with the surprise when it's flouted. /1

@bodhipaksa The problem we're experiencing is that those who drafted the constitution, in which all laws spring, assumed we would mostly be dealing with some sense of propriety and service to a greater good, even as they built a system to guard against despots. /2

@bodhipaksa So, when I say "stop complaining" I perhaps should say, face the reality of where we are and what we (global) have become. That's not going to change with an election or power shift. /end

@bodhipaksa Laws of all kind, are only as good as the character of those charged with executing them and this current crop of beasts have laid seeds for the next generation or two to believe flouting the law, or twisting it on'e's advantage is the path to success. /3
