"Something I picked up pretty early when I started studying sociology is that things that look like grand highly intentional conspiracies are so often just systems of power and incentive structures that connect people who have the same interests

Which isn’t to say there are no conspiracies but"

"Another result of this is that actual instances of conspiracy tend to look a lot more boring than people expect. Because most of the alignment is already accomplished by shared incentives, the actual conspiring can be just a casual conversation or a brief, boring policy document."

@gwynnion It seems like bizarre and wildly, horribly outlandish behavior at first glace, but if I imagine the kinds of assholes I grew up surrounded by coming into lots of money and power, yeah, they'd be doing something not unlike this... and not giving it much thought.

A lot of "conspiracies" are just class solidarity. Something we repeatedly see with the Epstein e-mails, for example, is how banal, pathetic, and entitled the participants are, how badly they want to be part of Epstein's "cool club" and do business together while sharing underage girls like drinks at brunch. There's no overt conspiracy, just a bunch of rich assholes who saw these kinds of "parties" as normal and wanted to be part of the influence network Epstein created.
