Amazing video about Sugen Gopal, Malaysian Indian chef and restaurant owner whose Roti King has been a huge success. He has a great cookbook too.

You may be looking at this food and wondering ‘why is it so different from the vegetarian South Indian foods I usually get’ and that’s because Malaysian Tamils tended to have come from lower caste communities. His success is a huge beacon of hope for many, especially those who haven’t seen this type of Tamil food represented.

It’s my favorite kind of South Indian food, anyway.

    Buy his book.

@skinnylatte My first taste of a roti was in a small establishment on Serangoon Rd in 1982 when I was 19. It was so unexpectedly wonderful I remember it to this day.

The roti was cooked on a huge flat stone in front of everyone. Nobody was allowed to talk to the cook to place an order, he was treated as some sort of minor deity.

@stacey_campbell I miss having a good roti prata / canai every single day. Especially knowing that I could have it at 3am if I so wished. The idea of this food of the gods being always available
