     As Vance notes, though Trump lied about his knowledge of and commitment to Project 2025, "he has gone on to impose [this] on the country. He lied about his intentions. That has had profound consequences for many Americans."

     And this is why the outspoken pushback of religious people who reject Christofascism as American policy for the entire world is critically important.

     One reason we cannot realistically deal with Trump and MAGA without engaging the question of religion is that, as Joyce Vance notes on looking back at Trump's first year in this term, he is very clearly following the road map set out by Project 2025 — a fascist, theocratic road map created by right-wing Christians.

     Paul Raushenbush replies that during the Civil Rights era, white Southern evangelicals were called on the carpet by Dr. King for fighting against rights for people of color. But other religious leaders — Rabbi Abraham Heschel, many mainstream Christians, and notably Black church leaders moved in precisely the opposite direction.

     Religion is not a monolithic force. It's a multivalent cultural phenomenon with multiple applications and effects.

     @RiaResists There's definitely not a great deal of substantial difference between right-wing Protestants and right-wing Catholics, though there are also people who lean to the left in both religious groups. The US Catholic bishops set much of this horror show in motion by allying with white evangelicals angry about racial integration in the 1960s, and from that time forward, authoritarian Catholics and evangelicals locked arms. Fortunately, the current pope moves in a different direction.
