   Musk seems to think that he can solve the problems and conflicts of a forum that serves hundreds of millions of people from every corner of humanity by:

   - cutting staff down to a lean team of more "hardcore" engineers

   - firing everyone responsible for dealing with social, policy, and legal issues

   - chasing away recognized experts and celebrities who've been providing free content

   - making the place more welcoming to nazis

   Sounds like a plan.

     @BobCollins @Shatter242 @mattblaze Unfortunately your instance is blocking many instances, and in fact is not even disclosing their full blocklist. Thankfully because the fediverse is decentralized, it's not the end of the world or the platform.
     
     You can fight this mindset by hosting your own instance on a cheap VPS, or if you're really cheap that old Core 2 Duo PC you have lying around in the closet (if you don't have one, you can find them at any thrift store for under $20 once in a while or a tech recycler).

     @Shatter242 @mattblaze I don't, in general, like the idea of blocking a whole instance. Doing too much of it will likely be the end of the Fediverse.

     Blocking a whole instance should be reserved for instances which by policy or (in)action are abhorrent. Please be selective.

     I just got scolded for failing to put a "content warning" on the previous post. Sorry, but no.

     I try very hard to be polite and follow norms, here and in person. But politics, policy, technology, and their intersection are not merely topics I find interesting in passing, they're central to my work and identity. If you find those things difficult - and I know some people, quite reasonably, do - you really should unfollow and perhaps mute or block me.

     Sorry to be harsh, but I am who I am.

     @BobCollins @mattblaze @Shatter242 I've got another single user instance that's 100% blackholed from fosstodon because all these instances copy off of each other without even asking the instance admins and it's listed on defcon.social for sure.
     
     It's as passive as Discord server bans are ;)

     I just checked, defcon.social does list the their "moderated" list. Are you suggesting that the list is incomplete? How would you know?

     @BobCollins @mattblaze @Shatter242 It's a little different in the sense that they do it after you make one instance owner/user angry, as opposed to preemptively adding you to a list.
     
     But there's two signs of this; you won't see posts on remote instances you make and you will find yourself staring at the "request sent" screen if you follow users. Some instances like FSE (funny because the name is a joke) prefer to null route IPs instead, which leads to the funny situation where as they've null routed this instance for some reason, it's blocked my home IP address from their instance. I was never told what set him off or made him block me for any reason, maybe it was joining an instance he hated.
     
     It's all a false sense of security since if you're trying to protect users, people on instances you've blocked can see posts that get to their instance and yell things at you without you knowing.

     I will be watching for this. If so, I am NOT impressed. The admins from my instance are still dealing with the recent storm, so I will not ask them now.

     What you are saying is similar to why it's almost impossible to run your own mail server because of how easy it is to be caught up in a spam block list.

     You realize nothing at all has changed right? None of his speech policies are changing. People like you who throw around the word “Nazi” so frivolously really degrade the term Nazi. Are you just talking about someone who votes for a party or candidate you don’t like?

     As far as the IT staff cut, being in IT, I can tell you it’s pretty likely that place had an absolutely garbage pile of people doing jack nothing. We’re on the verge of a second dot com crash. I’ve written about it here if you’re curious:

     The crazy thing is that Twitter has the highest chance of surviving the next dot com collapse right now because Elon is trying to move it from red to green. Uber, Netflix, AirBnB .. the titans .. they are in VC backed debt bubbles. He doesn’t fail very often. I mean, he could just end up taking your tax money to keep Twitter alive, like he does for Tesla and SpaceX.

     He’s also creating a network where people subscribe; were people aren’t the product; something literally everyone’s been asking for but no one will pay for .. and all the celebrities are being whiny little bitches about $8.

     Now, I don’t plan on going back to Twitter (deleted it two years ago). I don’t like Elon Musk, but not for the same reasons as you. He as openly stated he wanted a WeChat: an app that every citizen needs for payments, jobs, identity verification (Elon loves the CCP) .. his nuerolink program is pure evil and there are reports of some very unethical research that went into it (not to mention all the monkeys that died and they kept going forward anyway). He’s a government defense contractors and Mark Dice does a good video on all his issues:

     He’s about as evil as Bill Gates and I don’t like him, but you’re a fool if you think Twitter is going to crash. In 4 years he’ll probably be the only big tech company still making money.
