IMHO, the right answer is to take the money, but invest it all on index funds. Thus the donation can be used to keep the project running indefinitely in its current scope.

@iju @babble_endanger @FediThing Yep, I said this long ago. Of course if the donor is going to cut you off if you don't use it the way they expect, you need a way to disguise it long enough to build up an endowment.
