@MastodonEngineering please prioritise the existing work being done to backfill previously unseen profiles with actual posts. Just seeing profiles without posts is a huge issue with the current UX.
Bluesky has already proven that starter packs are converted to BlockLists that are soon abused to limit the reach of people without reasonable cause, with malicious intent
Start small, curate your follow feed. Follow your moots' follows.
Follow hashtags.
Don't think to jump into a social media platform and have 5k followers within a week.
@MastodonEngineering “please rank all options”? Ow, f*ck off. You have no idea of UX.
@MastodonEngineering on the first question, "number of people i have blocked that this person follows" is an extremely valuable negative indicator of trustworthiness. most client UIs don't surface it too well but it was very useful in the dying days of twitter to quickly tell how much of a chud someone was.
@MastodonEngineering I quit on the second question: the 2 initial questions require me to rank ALL 14 items though most of them are useless for the given purpose and 2 are impossible AFAIK in the interfaces that I use.
Please don't rudely waste my time if you want my help for free.
Unpaid surveys should have *no* compulsory questions.
@MastodonEngineering I'm using an iPhone SE which is quite small compared to other models. That said: Folks, just tilt your screens in landscape mode. If you do so, it's quite easy to take the survey.
@MastodonEngineering two additional opinions I didn't have the opportunity to include:
- for gauging authenticity: it would be much more helpful to know how I've engaged with which of their posts, rather than just whether I have
- for judging recommendations: frequency of posts is very important to me. I'm one of the sickos who reads my whole timeline, so I'm never going to follow someone who posts five times a day regardless of how good the posts are.
@MastodonEngineering I just filled it.
My suggestion for a profile improvement would be the option to translate the profile info directly, as we (usually?) do with posts.
Direct post translation makes possible to follow and interact with users we don't share common languages with, it's fantastic, even if not perfect!
I think being able to translate profile bios easily would encourage cross-language follows, with beneficial effects overall.
@MastodonEngineering Unfortunately the survey is totally inaccessible for blind/vision impaired using Jaws on laptop web browser. First significant question asks about important trust factors which reads as checkboxes but apparently error says you want them ranked but no way to do that with keyboard it would seem - probably other screenreaders can't use either
@MastodonEngineering The first question asking how I decide who to follow wanted all choices ranked, and I only look at one or two at most. I stopped right there; too much work to rank things I don’t care about.
