    I am once again begging, begging everyone to hold these 3 thoughts in their head at once:

    1. Plastics recycling is not very effective. It’s far, far better to not use plastic at all in the first place, and that failing, far better to reuse.

    2. Plastics recycling is not worthless or pointless. Don’t just throw it all away because “iT dOEsn’T matTeR.” A miserable 5% reclaimed is still better than 0% reclaimed.

    3. Plastics recycling is nonetheless part of a petrochemical greenwashing campaign, per @CelloMomOnCars’s post below. https://mastodon.social/@CelloMomOnCars/115650231600448649

      California sued Exxon for lying about plastic recycling. "The lawsuit, filed in Superior Court of California in San Francisco, says ExxonMobil promoted recycling as a “cure-all for plastic waste,” even though the company knew that plastic would be difficult to eradicate and that certain methods of recycling could not process much of the waste produced." https://www.nbcnews.com/science/environment/california-sues-exxonmobil-plastic-recycling-deception-rcna172267 Exxon sued California for "defamation". Because they're bullies. https://fortune.com/2025/01/08/exxon-mobil-sues-california-ag-defamation/

      Also the microplastics will be worse than the asbestos.

      You don't have to ditch all plastics in one go (you can't) but just take that first step. Then the next.

      I am specifically irked by the number of otherwise sensible people who see 1 and 3 and refuse to see 2, using their cynicism to rationalize their laziness.

      This of course also happens with outright trash. Recycling is neither the cause of nor the solution to this horrifying problem.

      @inthehands @CelloMomOnCars

      I read downthread until someone posted what I was going to post, which is that throughout the history of plastics recycling most of the 95% not recovered has been dumped in a poor country somewhere. And they were answered "where would you landfill that waste"!

      I guess dumping it in an open dump in a poor country is supposed to be better than an expensive landfill in a wealthy country?
