Once I migrated my bookmarks from Delicious to #Pinboard, and it was so good. I really liked Pinboard's minimal approach and paid each year for having them archive all the pages I've ever bookmarked. We're talking 20k+ pages which I've bookmarked over a time of 20+ years; of course, many of the oiriginal websites are no longer online.

Being able to do a full text search through that archive has become such a vital part of my everyday research. I really have buillt my own search engine over the years.

But now, I worry that Pinboard is on the decline. The guy running it doesn't seem to care as much anymore and many times when I bookmark a page, it's not archived (error code: 500).

So I might have to start looking for another #bookmarking service. One which will still archive everything and make it searchable for me. And which will also accept importing the 20k+ existing bookmarks.

Does anything like such an alternative even exist?

Note sure how you use Pinboard today but I'm a big fan of Raindrop.io, paying for the service since a few years. Lot of features besides bookmarking and indexing, entirely possible to upload files to it and have them indexed as well.

Raindrop has an API so it should be able to import anything. Just not sure if you can export indexed archive data from Pinboard, and if you can import it to Raindrop.

If it doesn't need to be online, consider a choice that looks a bit weird, at first: #Zotero.

It's typically used as a reference management software for bibliographic data. But you can also import Firefox bookmarks (preserving tags and folder structure). IIRC, Pinboard can export at least Netscape navigator books, so maybe Zotero can import it. If it can't, try importing them into Firefox first, and then exporting them to HTML for Zotero.

Zotero's browser plugin connects to a local instance of Zotero and not only bookmarks the URL, but also a copy of the current state of the bookmarked website.

With respect to archived pages, sadly I'm of a migration solution.

Hope this helps a bit, though I'm aware your pain point is probably the archive of old websites.

@bike4climate Importing all bookmarks worked very well, and I think I might stick to Raindrop.
Now I'm about to also download all archived pages from Pinboard, then try uploading it to Raindrop.
