@lain > sets up an amazing mysterious universe
See, that's the problem. It was an amazing mysterious movie. It didn't need to be a universe. Not everything needs to be a universe, because eventually if you keep exploring a universe you're going to take away all the mystery from it. Thankfully, Aliens is still a good movie in its own right.
To me, the most tragic case of expanding on something until it's ruined is (also) from Ridley Scott, it's Blade Runner. Scott insisting that Deckard be a replicant in re-edits completely undermines the beautiful message of the movie (and of PKD's original story). Which is if Deckard is a biological human yet also an unfeeling callous prick, how is he more human than Roy?
Anyway, thank you for your attention to this matter.

the alien franchise is probably one of the best examples of overexplaining, the first movie is great and sets up an amazing mysterious universe, everything that came after it just made it worse
