    An hour thirty @notjustbikes on John Forester, the father of Effective Cycling? Sign me up.

    I'm curious how people identify themselves in the Netherlands if they do both utility and sport cycling. That's where I'm at - I enjoy fast riding, but it's just not the right bike for grocery runs. (I have an upright beach cruiser with panniers for that with big fat tires and a cushy, springy seat.)

      Not Just Bikes — This is Why Cycling is Dangerous in America
      from Not Just Bikes
      In the 60s and 70s, America experienced a "bike boom" and with it came a demand for safer bicycle infrastructure. So in the 1970s, one cyclist dedicated his life to cycling education ... and against bike lanes of any kind.

      @mausmalone oh wow that's insane.

      30 mph (~50 km/h) is really really fast. I get that people on racing bikes CAN achieve that (especially down hill), but designing ALL infrastructure for that speed is just stupid.

      @notjustbikes I just want to "yes, and" the INSANITY of Forester claiming that bicycle infrastructure should be aimed at people going 30 mph on a bike.

      The venerable Bike Calculator (http://www.bikecalculator.com/) is a tool you can use to figure out how much power you need to move a given weight at a given speed up a given incline.

      On a flat surface for an average weight rider, to sustain 30 mph you're looking at OVER 600 WATTS. That's a ludicrous amount of sustained power.

      @notjustbikes I've managed it once down a steep hill and let me tell you it's *terrifying* the first few times.

      There's definitely a moment where you think "gee, I hope my brakes are up to this ..."

      I've gotten into cycling for sport and that means going up and down climbs for practice and even now I keep myself to under 25 mph in the descent. It's just too sketchy.
