GNOME is finally dropping ancient X11 / Xorg code from the "Mutter" compositor & window manager: https://gitlab.gnome.org/GNOME/mutter/-/merge_requests/4505

All those 27,000+ lines of ancient C code across 183 files will finally be lost in time, like tears in the rain 😌

I'm looking forward to the benefits of a more maintainable codebase, QA, and bug tracker. In 2026, I think we'll need help to clean up hundreds of old X11-specific bug reports.
