We're having issues with our oldest. He's not completing work at school, and his pulling some bad grades on quizzes and exceptional grades on tests. He has one B and everything else is an A.

We can't figure out what is going on. There are some issues with the teacher of the class with the B. I looked over one of the quizzes, and I think the way she wrote the questions was problematic. And his friends are saying that he is sleeping in certain classes.

I have a meeting with the teacher this week and several emails to the principal. And we told him that while he is able to finish his commitment to marching band, he will most likely not be allowed to play in basketball pep band.

"Oh," he tells us. "It's OK. I only need a 2.5 to play in pep."

No, kiddo. Not the school's decision. Our decision. And that seems to have him reconsidering things.

    Now, my mother...

I'm so pissed at my mom.

I typically talk to her every day, but I didn't call yesterday because I felt like crap. Vertigo - probably related to stress.

Call this morning and tell her that the discussion about participation seems to have had an impact on the oldest.

"OK, but just know that taking this away could make him less motivated."

I told her I understood, and we will be looking at a number of things. But pulling pep band finally seems to have captured his attention.

      More pushback.

Remind her of all of the other things we are doing: meeting with the teacher, doctor's appointment because he is presenting as very confused at times (my husband is diabetic and zoned out if his sugar is low), revisiting the special ed testing from seven years ago because he does have an auditory issue.

Totally dismissive. So, I said that I really wanted her to say she thinks I've got a very good plan - covering everything.

She refused. And I hung up her. Called back later. And ended up hanging up again.

Now, my dad died 10 days before my Junior year. And I ended up graduating from high school with a 1.2 GPA.

Yesterday, I also talked with my best friend, who I met in high school. We talked about my oldest, as well as my experience. My high school did nothing to help me. Only one teacher acknowledged my dad died. The friend who lost his mother recently confirmed that one administrator brought him in to her office to express condolences. That was it. Two kids with dead parents, and the school offered minimal support.

My mom did nothing to help. She was grieving, and I understand.

I get what she's saying about pep band, but I can't help but think she feels my efforts to figure what is going on and solve it is somehow a criticism of her.

My mother needs to get over herself.

In other news, our IEP meeting on Tuesday was fantastic. If the school follows through, my youngest will be OK.

They really screwed up two weeks ago. And they seem to have a new game plan.
