I spent some time today trying to get the Windows 10 end of life update for Mom's PC. It said the PC was eligible for a free update, then Windows gave me an error every time I attempted to enroll.

Plan B. I'm just going to get Mom a Mini Mac (fuck Windows 11), and see if her old PC can be donated. I think Linux would be a bit too much for both her and me, thus the Mac route.

@skyfaller Look at that fancy thing! Personally, I've gone in the opposite direction. My case is MASSIVE and I love it. I have many hard drives and two optical drives stuffed into it. Here's a picture from back from when I was first building it.

Though that Meerkat would be tempting as a second PC... 🤔

@silver_huskey And if you specifically like the Mac Mini form factor, well, they have that: https://system76.com/desktops/meerkat/

@silver_huskey Depending on what your mom does with her computer, I think it's worth seriously considering Linux.

It's a relatively expensive brand, installing Linux on whatever old computer you have lying around is cheaper, but I've had good luck with System76: https://system76.com/

They're the Mac of the Linux world, because they make their own OS (flavor of Linux) and their own hardware, so they can make sure it "just works". Good support.

My less technical partner got one recently, too.

@skyfaller Absolutely. Well repairability and upgrades.

Those are some nice looking cases you two have!

@silver_huskey Yeah, if the goal is repairability, a bigger case should be better, more parts compatibility. You may be able to use a small part in a big case, but a big part won't fit in a small case.

Maggie went for a larger case (on the left), mine is a bit smaller (on the right).

I will be getting Linux for myself, though. I'll go the dual boot route with Windows 10 until next October. That should be plenty of time to get my workflows and the like transferred.
