1. This 1913 Halloween postcard, titled “Jolly Hallow E’en,” captures the warm and mysterious charm of early 20th-century Halloween imagery. The scene shows a young girl in a bright orange cloak and tall red witch’s hat sitting beside a bubbling cauldron suspended over a crackling fire. A small black cat, silhouetted against the glow, sits attentively at her side as if sharing in the ritual. The background reveals a dusky twilight with the moon or sun setting behind distant trees, casting a serene golden hue over the landscape. The ornate border is adorned with grinning cat faces and curling Art Nouveau lines, lending the image both playfulness and elegance. At the bottom, a faint inscription reads, “May the path be good to you,” offering a warm Halloween wish. Like many postcards from this era, it combines a sense of gentle magic, autumnal beauty, and innocent fantasy, reflecting the early 1900s fascination with Halloween as a night of friendly enchantment rather than fright.
