I generally cannot stand most travel videos on YouTube because I cannot deal with the ‘global north gaze’ upon the rest of the world
But Gambian travel vlogger Ibrahim Gano has such a fun take on places I’ve never been to and it reminds me that the genre can be.. not terrible

I can’t watch another YouTuber claim everyone is amazed they can speak Chinese or Japanese but actually they speak it badly and everyone is just being polite

In some of his videos, Gano talks about visa issues and also racism among different groups and countries in Africa. He had one in Zanzibar where people hilariously insisted he must be from Zambia
Just perspectives you don’t get with ‘we are from a rich country visiting the rest of the world and we are shocked by everyday things, like having to eat with my hands, or having to squat in a toilet’
Like it’s clear those videos aren’t for people who do eat with their hands (me) or who squat in a toilet (also me) who would never imagine those things are interesting enough to make videos about, which makes those types of videos extremely basic and boring to me
