@coolboymew@SPCmovienight One of the best things about Dark City, one of the most underrated parts, is that it's not some dream or simulation or alternate reality. Everything you see happening in the story is actually happening in the story. When buildings twist and reshape themselves, it's not a hallucination or "glitch."
It's interesting, because there are some things at the beginning that seem to hint at it being some sort of computer program or simulation, such as characters being randomly replaced (the hotel clerk getting netflix raceswapped to become black!!!!!!!!).
The only movie where I'll accept "it's all a simulation" is the wonderful classic eXistenZ, because about 5 minutes into the movie they explain that they're going to put on xyber cool gaming headsets to play a VR game that taps into your mind, they even goof on the 90s cyber rad spelling of the title of the movie in the movie itself. The point of the story in eXistenZ is about entering a game that's so realistic that you can't tell the game from reality, and the movie is about having fun with that concept in a way that's actually pro-video game (the only villains of the movie are people who are anti-video game).
But Dark City deserves a ton of credit for not resorting to some sort of buffer layer between reality and the crazy events of the movie. The whole thing is just really happening, and it's not confusing or badly explained. They spell it out plainly, they make it understandable, and they demonstrate it happening. All of it is aided by great style and cinematography and solid acting.
Also, great example of "mystery box" storytelling that actually has real content within, instead of just being a dead end of empty nothing bullshit like Lost or Prometheus (more like PROMOtheus) or other gay kaballah jewish shit (more like dibbuk box instead of mystery box) that's influenced by those things. Not only does Dark City have a real answer to its crazy mysterious mystical bullshit, but it has a pretty clean straightforward logical answer. Instead of trying to be vague and evasive about what's going on, most of the characters tell you exactly what's going on right from the beginning, except that within the first hour it's crazy people saying what's going on from a state of being imbalanced and confused, like a reverse red herring where you might be influenced to doubt it instead of believing it.
The only negative I'd say about Dark City is the big goofy psychic (internet) fight at the end, first time I saw this movie I thought it was silly and it brought the movie down for me. Now I just appreciate it because it's a nice bombastic over the top ridiculous ending to a movie that was kind of sober and mysterious for most of the runtime. You can tell this whole thing was the director's true vision. And whatever version you watch of the movie, the very ending where they reveal what the (TITular heh) Dark City actually is remains one of the best and most memorable moments of science fiction film, not just revealing the city but when he turns it to face the sun. A fantastic ending that, even when I first saw it, made up for anything negative I could've said about the movie. So I consider that an easy 5.
I didn't really watch School Spirit but I did notice there were titties in it so I also gave that a 5. 😏
