     @hellomiakoda Jay doubled down by posting pictures of waffles to signify she didn't give a shit about our feelings. The problem user in question did the same thing. And it took on a life of its own from there, as these things do.

     @hellomiakoda There is a Twitter "joke" that if you say you like pancakes, someone on the Internet will accuse you of hating waffles, i.e., make a pointless accusation as a distraction from your original point.

     While talking about her company's moderation policies, someone asked why anti-trans bigots were coddled on Bluesky and CEO Jay posted "WAFFLES!" to mock the question. "Fuck you," basically. Within a day, every transphobe on the site was using waffles as a dog whistle.

     @CaptMorgan @gwynnion I hate it. There's a song from a cartoon I've occassionally posted just cause it's catchy, and actual waffles are awesome. Now this innocent funny thing has all this extra awful crap associated with it.

     This is precisely one of my fears. Never would I imagine a breakfast food would have anything to do with hate, but here we are.

     @gwynnion @hellomiakoda So waffles basically means “I hate LGBTQ people ?“. Thats harsh

     By using words like this, he allows the transphobe community to claim him as one of their own, and declares bsky a safe space for hate speech. At the same time he maintains deniability that the word meant what it means to other transphobes.

     He is hiding behind a word.
