I hope I'm alive long enough to hear historians try to explain our current political climate. I'm excited for the documentary. Maybe some of us can do interviews, looking like those WW2 vets with that broken faraway look in their eyes.

I think there's something in the air, too, similar to what Adam Curtis describes in his documentary "Hypernormalisation", which he defines as that sense of unreality where everyone knows the systems underpinning society are crumbling, yet collectively pretend they’re not. Politicians and citizens alike resign themselves to maintaining the pretense of a functioning society.

"We live in a world where the powerful deceive us. We know they lie, they know we know they lie, they don’t care. We say we care, but we do nothing. And nothing ever changes. It’s normal. Welcome to the post-truth world."

Curtis looked at the fall of the Soviet Union, but there are parallels with what's happening in America today.

Also, don't apologise for having optimism. Maintaining hope that thing can get better is a sine qua non for actually materially improving our situation.

@RickiTarr I can like old cars without forgetting all the footage with those same cars in it. The history can't be ignored just because my childhood had the vehicles in it.

For example, it's impossible to see a 1963 Ford Fairlane wagon without context.

Freedom Riders James Chaney, Andrew Goodman, and Michael Schwerner were murdered. The car they were riding in was torched. It was a 1963 Fairlane wagon.

@YakyuNightOwl There's some truth in this, the younger generation only knows this and they don't get it.

@RickiTarr Once more folks realize nostalgia is poisonous, and there are reasons why most people don't buy into "good old days" jive, perhaps they will move on from old hateful framework.

We're not riding steam trains anymore. Except for special Christmas things. Change is inevitable.

I know this is putting a lot of faith in the future, but what can I say, I'm an optimist.
