I honestly, truly believe this rage at the intrusiveness of tech will lead more people to opting out of it, finding new ways (better ways) to live. I know it's motivating the heck out of me in my own personal life, and I was 100% the tech optimist enamored of shiny new tech for most of my life. They lost *me* and if they're losing me, they have to be losing so many others.

@susankayequinn I used to use Google everything, and was so excited by the new (at the time) AI in the Pixel phones, and I had Google Home minis all over the place...
They lost me. All those minis are in the closet, as I figure out how to reprogram or strip 'em for parts.
I don't even run Android for my phone anymore.
I dumped Google shit for NextCloud.I've also been going back to things like RSS.

@susankayequinn @danielquinn Actually, algo free isn't hard to get. It just requires you to let go of "it just works".
RSS feeds for news.
My calendar and shit is on NextCloud, same for files I want available places besides my computer.
You have to do a little learning, just a little, but it's doable. -

I feel like we need both
Reduced tech omnipresence in everything, especially screens capturing all our attention (even if it's Mastodon!)
*and*
billionaire-free, algo-free tech
It's hard to get the second, so the first is a good substitute, but I like both

@susankayequinn a lot of this anger goes away once you drop their tech for Free alternatives. Much like going back to watching cable tv and being flooded with ads, being forced to use Windows or Mac literally drives me to rage.
My hope is that rather than giving up on tech, we'll see more people embrace options that respect them.
