   @etherdiver That's a good point, and I also just think that the 00s were kinda peak autolysis for the industry, at least to me, and they kinda constituted one of the lowest points in the history of modern popular music.

   Like, yes, plenty of high points, but overall just a net negative.

     f I had to guess why, it's because self-released music is nearly always passion driven, but anything on a label is at least partially marketing/tastemaker driven. In other words, since there's so little money in music these days, there's no reason to try to cater to money for those on the margins.

     I mentioned this to a friend the other day, and I know some of you will find it hard to believe, but the overall quality of self-released, DIY music I cover ever week is much, MUCH higher than the overall quality of label-released "industry" music I used to cover on a weekly basis in the '00s.
